The most common cause of lymphangitis in humans is Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A strep), although it can also be caused by the fungus Sporothrix schenckii. Lymphangitis is sometimes mistakenly called 'blood poisoning'. In reality, 'blood poisoning' is synonymous with sepsis.
