Xiphinema species are migratory ectoparasitic nematodes that feed on an extensive range of hosts and several species are vectors of nepoviruses. These long nematodes are readily distinguished from most other plant parasitic nematodes by a long stylet with forked odontostyle and flanged odontophore.
