Inflammation is affected by topical application of a boron containing compound/complex in which a central tetrahedral boron atom is covalently bound to four ligands. At least one of the ligands preferably includes an oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, or sulfur atom, and preferably all four ligands include at least one such atom. Preferred ligands are saccharides and amino acids, including fructose, sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, sorbose, serine and threonine. Especially preferred ligands have a conformation with at least two hydroxyl groups, or one hydroxyl group and one amino group in a 1,2- and a 1,3-position relative to each other, providing a high association constant in the range of about 3,000 and about 20,000. The compounds/complexes are preferably provided in formulations which provide good transdermal delivery, including appropriate solvent systems, microemulsions, liposomes. Particularly targeted inflammations are those of the joints and skin, including bums such as sunburn.

Boron compounds and complexes as anti-inflammatory agents

The present invention relates to novel formulations of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) having improved stability during storage over extended periods of time as liquids, which retain significant pharmaceutical activity during such storage and/or which are physiologically compatible. The formulations of the present invention comprise (a) a pharmaceutically effective concentration of CRF, (b) a buffer to maintain the pH of the formulation between about 2.0 to about 5.0 or about 6.0 to about 9.0 when in liquid form and (c) an alcohol such as mannitol, sorbitol, methanol, glycerol, or the like. Other aspects of the present invention involve addition of various other components to the formulations described herein for the purpose of decreasing the rate of degradation of the CRF peptide or increasing its solubility in solution. Finally, the present invention is further directed to methods for preparing such novel pharmaceutical formulations of CRF and methods of using those formulations to reduce inflammation and edema in mammals.

The antioxidant eye drops is a topical ophthalmic formulation that contains four nutraceuticals (namely, astaxanthin, resveratrol, pyruvate and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)) having antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and chelating activity in a carbomer gel carrier. The active ingredients can reduce oxidative stress through free radical scavenging and chelating activity. The carrier is composed of a solution of deionized water containing about 0.4% Carbopol 980 NF, 5.7% sorbitol. 0.01% cetrimide, 0.01% EDTA, and sodium chloride and sodium hydroxide in adequate amounts to adjust both the viscosity and the pH of the topical carrier to pH 7.0-7.4.
