A chest wound seal for treating traumatic pneumothorax following a penetrating chest wound. The chest wound seal comprises a wound pad with an absorbent bottom surface and a nonporous top surface embedded with unidirectional valves that allow evacuation of air and fluid from the pleural cavity but prevents re-entry of air into the thorax. A central vacuum column mounted over at least one unidirectional valve. The chest wound seal further comprises a plurality of wound pad segments radiating from the central vacuum column, wherein each segment comprises at least one manual valve configured to create a separate sealed area against the skin surface to suit body types with different size and morphological features. The central vacuum column is adapted to be connected to a vacuum pump which enables evacuation of harmful air and fluid from the pleural cavity thereby reducing the shock induced by hypoxia and increasing patient survivability.

Methods and pharmaceutical compositions for preconditioning and/or providing neuroprotection to the animal central nervous system against the effects of ischemia, trauma, metal poisoning and neurodegeneration, including the associated cognitive, behavioral and physical impairments. In one embodiment, the method is accomplished by stimulating and stabilizing hypoxia-inducible factor-1.alpha. (HIF-1.alpha.). HIF-1.alpha. is known to provide a neuroprotective benefit under ischemic conditions. Patients at risk for certain diseases or disorders that are associated with risk for cerebral ischemia may benefit, e.g., those at risk for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Wilson's disease or stroke or those patients having head or spinal cord injury. Patients undergoing certain medical procedures that may result in ischemia may also benefit. Initially, the possibility of ischemia or neurodegeneration is recognized. Intranasal therapeutic agents are administered to the upper third of the nasal cavity to bypass the blood-brain barrier and access the central nervous system directly to avoid unwanted and potentially lethal side effects. Therapeutic agents include those substances that interact with iron and/or copper such as iron chelators, copper chelators, and antioxidants. A particular example of such therapeutic agents is the iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO). Intranasal administration of DFO is known to stimulate and/or stabilize HIF-1.alpha. and provides an efficient and safe method for pre-conditioning the brain to protect against cerebral ischemia. Moreover, DFO is shown to decrease weight loss in subjects when administered pre and/or post stroke.

Methods for providing neuroprotection for the animal central nervous system against neurodegeneration caused by ischemia

Described herein is a head cooling system comprising: a source of compressed breathable gas; a vortex tube comprising an inlet, a hot gas outlet and a cold gas outlet, the inlet operably connected to the source of compressed breathable gas; and an interface for delivering cooled gas to a nasopharyngeal cavity in fluid communication with the cold gas outlet. The head cooling system may be used in a method to reduce neurodegeneration in a subject, for example neurodegeneration from ischemia, anoxia, cardiac arrest, trauma or neurodegenerative disease. The head cooling system may also be used in a method to prophylactically protect a subject at risk of neurodegeneration, for example neurodegeneration from ischemia, anoxia, cardiac arrest, trauma or neurodegenerative disease.

A process for the treatment of hypoxia is provided. The process involves the infusion of highly oxygenated perfluoro-chemicals into the peritoneal cavity of a patient, for oxygen transport into the body and carbon dioxide transport out of the body. The oxygenated perfluorocarbons are subsequently removed from the peritoneal cavity. The infusion and removal can be on a continuous or intermittent basis.
