Creatine phosphokinase (CP) activity was increased in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in stroke patients as compared to a group of control patients. CP activity tended to be higher in hemorrhagic stroke as compared to ischemic one. The brain isoenzyme CP has a major impact on its total activity (above 75%). The presence of muscular CP isoenzyme in the CSF of stroke patients was explained by increased blood-brain barrier permeability, and blood admixture to SCF.
