Methods of treating a subject suffering from an ischemic condition and of preventing an ischemia-reperfusion injury in a subject suffering from an ischemic condition, particularly, but not exclusively ischemic heart disease and the subject is in particular a human, includes administering an effective amount of a carbohydrate composition extracted from Panax ginseng to the subject. The carbohydrate composition of the present invention extracted from Panax ginseng shows exceptional cardio-protective effect and, thus, provides a highly advantageous and highly promising treatment option for treatment of ischemic conditions and prevention of ischemia-reperfusion injury. The present invention further provides a method of protecting cells against hypoxia and reoxygenation induced cell death. Still further, the present invention provides a carbohydrate composition extracted from Panax ginseng and a pharmaceutical formulation comprising it.

Carbohydrate composition extracted from Panax ginseng and its use in the treatment of ischemic conditions

Intrauterine Fetal Growth Restriction (IUGR) is a very important clinical problem for which no satisfactory treatment is available so far. The current invention of intravenous (IV) hypertonic glucose supplementation to the mother to improve the glucose transfer to the fetus at the intervillous space by improved facilitated diffusion can be a safe and easy way of treating this problem, as the improved fetal blood glucose can lead to fetal lipogenesis that can conserve the fetal O.sub.2 (oxygen) utilization and also relieve the associated metabolic derangements of fetal hypoxia, hypercapnia, and acidosis, apart from replenishing the oxidized coenzymes needed for the carbohydrate metabolism. The use of trans-amniotic fetal feeding studied by animal experiments can be difficult in humans, because of the danger of infection, which can be overcome by the use of implantable ports with a sterile patch technique.

Intrauterine fetal growth restriction--the treatment modalities for clinical research, and the biochemical rationale

Intrauterine fetal growth restriction (IUGR) is an affliction of a disparaging spectrum, placental insufficiency being the major inciting pathology. The resultant fetal hypoglycemia is alleviated by intravenous hypertonic D-glucose 25-50% maternal supplements, by improving the V.sub.max of placental substrate transfer, as per Michaelis-Menten model. Fetal normoglycemia so restored in turn surprisingly improves fetal hypoxia, hypercapnia if any, lactic acidemia, acidosis, oliguria with/without oligohydromnios, hypertriglyceridemia, and the fetal nutrient, mineral and vitamin acquisition. The list being phenomenal can only convince an inquiring reader by a biochemical sojourn into the aquatic world of the fetus, herein described. Maternal carbohydrate predominant, essential amino acids/fatty acids rich IUGR-diet incorporating maximal amounts of vitamin and minerals are highly beneficial for attainable placental V.sub.max. Transamniotic isotonic D-glucose supplement via minimally invasive `Suprapubic extraperitonial pelvic approach` for amniotomy (Sumathi Paturu's technique) with a Subcutaneously Implanted Pregnancy Port (SIPP) catheter is the additional therapy advocated.
