The present invention concerns a gel composition useful for treating or preventing caries of the root which comprises sodium fluoride and an antibacterial agent in concentrations sufficient to retard or prevent caries of the root and a gel carrier. In the most preferred embodiment, the gel composition further comprises preservatives and taste agents and contains a gel carrier which comprises a combination of gum tragacanth, gum arabic and agar-agar.

A chewing gum is provided which is capable of releasing into the oral cavity relatively large amounts of finely-divided water-insoluble therapeutic materials, which chewing gum includes a water-soluble phase formed of aqueous softener, and the finely divided therapeutic component to be released, said therapeutic component being coated with a water-soluble coating agent for preventing resorption of therapeutic component back into the gum base and, optionally, a first sweetener, dispersed throughout the aqueous softener, and a relatively water-insoluble phase formed of a plurality of separate and distinct masses suspended in and dispersed throughout the water-soluble phase, each of said masses formed of particles of gum base and, optionally, particles of a second sweetener, suchas mannitol and/or sorbitol or sugar, enveloped by particles of gum base. Upon chewing the above gum, the therapeutic component is, in fact, released in the oral cavity in relatively large quantities, together with the aqueous softener.The therapeutic component to be released may comprise orally beneficial materials, such as dicalcium phosphate, antacids, such as magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, as well as vitamins, drugs and the like. Chewing cum capable of releasing finely divided water-insoluble materials therefrom

The present invention provides a periodontal composition compounded to include at least one alkaline agent to render a gel or paste having a pH of at least 9.0 to 11.0, and preferably 9.5 to 10.0. The preferred alkaline agent included in the composition is potassium hydroxide, and the composition preferably also includes aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. Of these agents, potassium hydroxide is the most basic compound utilized. Also suitably included in the composition (which can have the consistency of a liquid or suspension, but is preferably compounded as a stable gel or paste) are other excipients including: thickeners that are capable of withstanding the high pH environment without degradation (such as xanthane gum and microcrystalline cellulose); organoleptic agents such as gum arabic and polyethylene glycol; flavorings such as sodium chloride, acesulfame potassium, sodium saccharine, and mint flavorings; stabilizers such as colloidal silica; mild abrasive agents such as microcrystalline formed silica; a foaming agent such as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl phosphate; and a fluoride compound such as sodium fluoride or sodium monofluorophosphate for anti-cavity effect.

Periodontal composition

A saliva substitute composition includes glycerin, gum, water, and a pH buffering system. Sweeteners, colorants, and preservatives may be optionally combined. The glycerin component serves both as a lubricant and as a delivery vehicle for water from the composition to moisten the mouth. The gum component provides further lubrication and serves a water retention function. Gum arabic, xanthum, or sorghum are examples. The pH buffering system includes acidic and basic components. Citric acid or citrate salts and carbonate was found to be an effective buffering system. The composition is used to maintain moisture in the mouth when little or no natural saliva is produced, providing relief from dry mouth, as a symptom of xerostomia, mucositis, and stomatitis, as well as general inflammation and/or ulceration of mucous membranes, while avoiding pH imbalances which may lead to tooth decay and/or injury to the upper digestive tract including the oral cavity, oropharynx, or esophagus. These compositions may be further incorporated in mouthwashes and soft drinks, as well as oral medicaments.
