Although normally the sympathetic nerves aid vascular dilatation during effort, in certain diseases of the vascular system they have a reverse effect. Abolition of sympathetic vasoconstrictive impulses by sympathectomy is the most effective treatment in some chronic peripheral vascular conditions.
