The present disclosure relates to a method of inducing apoptosis in a cancer cell by delivery of exogenous Coenzyme Q1O or its metabolites thereof in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier to effectuate cell contact of endogenous Coenzyme Q1O or its metabolites thereof in addition to but not limited to mevalonic acid and oleic acid to form an intracellular complex. The present disclosure also provides a method of modulating the p53 pathway and Bcl-2 protein family in a manner that restores the apoptotic potential to a cancer cell by delivery of Coenzyme Q1O in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The present disclosure further provides a method to specifically normalize the ratio of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 gene family in a proportion to re-program a cancer cell to undergo apoptosis.

Described herein are compositions for parenteral administration that include an aqueous phase and 5 to 30%, by weight, of an oil phase, based on the total weight of the composition. The oil phase comprises the omega-3 fatty acid ethylesters eicosapentaenoic acid ethylester, docosahexaenoic acid ethylester, and mixtures thereof. The composition further comprises at least one anionic surfactant and at least one amphoteric surfactant, and less than 0.05% by weight of oleic acid, based on the total weight of the composition. Also described is a method for preparing such a composition as well as such compositions for use as a medicament, in particular for use in treating stroke, sepsis, Alzheimer's disease or cancer. Also featured are methods of treating these conditions by parenterally administering a composition to a patient in need thereof and methods of providing parenteral nutrition to such patients by administering to them a composition as described herein.

The invention relates to an antitumor composition based on hydrophobized hyaluronan and inorganic nanoparticles stabilized by oleic acid. The hydrophobized hyaluronan in the form of an acylated hyaluronan serves in the composition as a carrier of inorganic nanoparticles. Out of the group of inorganic nanoparticles, the composition may comprise superparamagnetic nanoparticles, nanoparticles of ZnO and moreover, upconversion nanoparticles. Said composition is selectively cytotoxic with respect to both suspension and adherent tumor cell lines, especially with respect to tumor cell lines of colorectum carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, lung carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma and breast adenocarcinoma. The highest cytotoxic effects were observed in case of the composition based on an oleyl derivative of hyaluronan with SPIONs. The composition of acylated hyaluronan with SPIONs may also be advantageously used for an in vivo detection of accumulation of the composition in the body, preferably in a tumor or in liver. Said composition is sterilizable in the final package.
