Will receive a 4oz cup coffee, three times daily (at 8:00, 12:00, and 16:00 hours)and instructed to consume the entirety of its liquid contents. This liquid consumption will begin on the morning of POD #1 at 8:00 hours. Duration of experimental treatment will last until first flatus or bowel movement or 7 days, whichever comes first.

Will receive a 4oz cup of decaffeinated coffee (at 8:00, 12:00, and 16:00 hours) and instructed to consume the entirety of its liquid contents. Postoperative Ileus

Regular coffee will be given a 4oz cup three times daily and will be instructed to consume all of its liquid contents.

Decaffeinated coffee will be given a 4oz cup three times daily and will be instructed to consume all of its liquid contents.

Decaffeinated coffee

Warm water will be given a 4oz cup three times daily and will be instructed to consume all of its liquid contents.

Prospective Study of the Effect of Coffee Consumption in Enhancing Recovery of Bowel Function Following Colorectal Surgery.

Time to first flatus and/or bowel movement as assessed twice per day by inquiry from the primary team and study investigators.

Evaluation of length of postoperative hospital stay, will be recorded from medical records.

Evaluation of number of episodes of vomiting will be collected from medical records

Number of nasogastric tube (re)insertion, will be collected from medical records

Evaluation of any anastomotic leak will be collected from medical records

Evaluation for any wound infection will be collected from medical records

Evaluation for any intra-abdominal abscess will be collected from medical records

Ultrasound guided bupivacaine 0.25% with epinephrine 1:400k will be injected to the transversus abdominis plane.

Laparoscopic guided bupivacaine 0.25% with epinephrine 1:400k will be injected to the transversus abdominis plane.

No TAP block performed
Placebo: The usual intraoperative and postoperative pain control; NO TAP block performed

Ultrasound guided bupivacaine 0.25% with epinephrine 1:400k will be injected to the transversus abdominis plane.
US TAP Bupivacaine/Epinephrine: Ultrasound guided bupivacaine 0.25% with epinephrine 1:400k will be injected to the transversus abdominis plane.

Grading per standard ASA guidelines:
ASA class I - normal healthy adult ASA class II - patients with mild systemic disease ASA class III - patients with severe systemic disease ASA class IV - patients with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life ASA class V - a moribund patient that is not expected to survive

American Society of Anesthesiologist Classification

Compare ultrasound-guided block of the transversus abdominis plane (TAP) vs laparoscopic-guided TAP block, versus no TAP block on opioid consumption in the first 24 hours. Patients hospital chart was queried for use of any intravenous opioid in the first 24 hours after surgery including fentanyl or hydromorphone and conversion to morphine per standard opioid dose conversion. Total morphine equivalents then summed for the 24 hour postoperative period and compared between groups.
