Compounds for treating abuse of nicotinic receptor agonists, addiction to psychostimulant drugs, addiction to opiates, addiction to alcohol, addiction to tobacco products, addiction to nicotine, schizophrenia and related diseases, depression and related conditions, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and colitis. The compounds competitively inhibit central nervous system acting nicotinic receptor agonists and act at the putative .alpha.3.beta.2* and .alpha.4.beta.2 neuronal nicotinic receptors in the central nervous system.

An (N-(pyridinylmethyl)-heterocyclic)ylideneamine compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.3, A, and B are as described below, and its pharmaceutically acceptable salts and prodrugs. Compounds of the formula I and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts and prodrugs are useful in the treatment of addictive disorders, such as the use of tobacco or other nicotine containing products, neurological and mental disorders such as senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type, Parkinson's disease, attentional hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, obesity, Tourette's Syndrome and ulcerative colitis.

Disclosed herein are compounds that bind to a neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. These compounds posses broad therapeutic use including the treatment of senile dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, attention deficit disorder, and the treatment of addictive disorders such as the use of tobacco in smoking or the use of other nicotine containing products. In addition, they have utility as cognitive enhancers, drug therapy for mental and neurological disorders related to a decrease in cholinergic function, for the treatment of obesity, Tourette's syndrome, or ulcerative colitis. Additionally, these compounds have utility as non-opioid analgesics for treatment of acute and chronic pain.
