Extracts of various species of the Moraceae family have estrogenic properties. For example, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Morus alba L. species possess estrogenic properties in both ER.alpha.+ and ER.beta.+ cells. These estrogenic effect include estrogen response element (ERE) stimulation as well as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) repression. Methods are provided for treating climacteric symptoms, breast and/or uterine cancer, and osteoporosis.

Estrogenic extracts of Morus alba and uses thereof

An extract of Chinese blackberry (Rubus suavissimus) has been found to inhibit angiogenesis, and two active fractions isolated. Gallic acid was shown to be one of the active anti-angiogenic compounds by an in vitro human angiogenesis model. Aqueous extracts from other plants either known or found to have gallic acid were also found to have anti-angiogenic activity. Various derivatives of gallic acid were found to inhibit angiogenesis. The extract from Chinese blackberry also slowed the growth of a pancreatic tumor and of corneal neovascularization in rats. Extracts from pomegranate were shown to inhibit angiogenesis in fat tissue. Extracts from Rubus spp, and other plants with gallic acid, and gallic acid and its derivatives will be useful for treating various diseases associated with neovascularization, including diabetic retinopathy, psoriasis, tumors, obesity, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.

A method for deriving compositions having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity from berries is provided. The method results in a berry extract compositions having stable anthocyanin content. In one aspect, the method comprises exposing a berry to a solvent composition having a pH of from about 1 to about 4.5, and recovering a berry extract having a stabilized anthocyanin content. The berry may be a blackberry. A cryoprotectant may be added, to further stabilize the anthocyanin content. Compositions comprising the berry extract of the present invention, formulated for oral and/or topical administration, are provided also, including nutritional supplements, capsules, enteric-coated capsules, film-coated capsules, tablets, enteric-coated tablets, film-coated tablets, chewing gums, lotions, creams, mucoadhesive gels, vanishing lotions, vanishing creams, and the like. In yet another aspect, the present invention provides methods and compositions for treating inflammation, oxidative damage, or cancer in a mammal.
