A herbal therapeutic composition is provided which enhances cardiac function comprising hawthorn berry, turmeric root and cayenne pepper. Other herbal substituents which further enhance this novel composition are disclosed including motherwort, bilberry, fresh dandelion root, and ginger root.

Therapeutic composition providing enhanced cardiac function

CAY-1 is a fungicidal saponin from the cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens) fruit. The saponins 1081 and 919, closely elute with, and are close structural relatives of, CAY-1. Saponin 1081 is poorly antifungal while 919 has no antifungal properties. Nongerminated and germinating conidia of Aspergilus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, and F. verticilioides were tested against pure CAY-1 and CAY-1:1081:919 at ratios of 8:1:1, 6:2:2 and 4:3:3 and efficacy was determined after various incubation times. Pure CAY-1 and all saponin mixtures were significantly (p&lt;0.001) lethal to the germinating conidia of A. flavus, A. niger, and F. solani. All saponin mixtures were equal or superior to pure CAY-1 in antifungal properties. Mixtures of the naturally occurring inactive or poorly fungicidal saponins with reduced levels of CAY-1 display superior fungicidal properties when compared to pure CAY-1 at the same dose levels.

Fungicidal properties of three saponins from Capsicum frutescens

A novel antifungal compound, "CAY-1", was isolated from the dried fruit of Capsicum frutescens (cayenne pepper), purified to homogeneity, and characterized as a novel sterol glycoside (a saponin) with a molecular mass of 1243.35 Da. CAY-1 demonstrates antifungal activity against a large variety of fungal organisms associated with diseases in plants, animals and humans including, but not limited to, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. parasiticus, A. niger, Pneumocystis carnii and Candida albicans, but has minimal toxic effects on mammalian cells.

The invention described herein encompasses methods and compositions of preventing or treating cancer comprising the administration of a combination of therapeutically effective amount of catechins, a group of polyphenols found in green tea, and Capsicum extracts. Compositions of catechins include but not limited to, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC). The unique compositions of the invention contain various combinations of the catechins and Capsicum extracts, in combination with each other or other therapeutic agents and are used to treat primary and metastatic cancers in humans. The invention also encompasses the varying modes of administration of the therapeutic compounds, including a formulation which may be used as a therapeutic compound for the treatment of cancer or as a dietary supplement for the prevention of cancer.
